Synopsis: Meet Pepper, swim team captain, chronic overachiever, and all-around perfectionist. Her family may be falling apart, but their massive fast-food chain is booming ― mainly thanks to Pepper, who is barely managing to juggle real life while secretly running Big League Burger’s massive Twitter account.
Enter Jack, class clown and constant thorn in Pepper’s side. When he isn’t trying to duck out of his obscenely popular twin’s shadow, he’s busy working in his family’s deli. His relationship with the business that holds his future might be love/hate, but when Big League Burger steals his grandma’s iconic grilled cheese recipe, he’ll do whatever it takes to take them down, one tweet at a time. All’s fair in love and cheese ― that is, until Pepper and Jack’s spat turns into a viral Twitter war. Little do they know, while they’re publicly duking it out with snarky memes and retweet battles, they’re also falling for each other in real life ― on an anonymous chat app Jack built. As their relationship deepens and their online shenanigans escalate ― people on the internet are shipping them?? ― their battle gets more and more personal, until even these two rivals can’t ignore they were destined for the most unexpected, awkward, all-the-feels romance that neither of them expected.
Tweet Cute is the perfect rainy day read.
This book was just FUN from start to finish. From the start, the Twitter war between Pepper/Big League Burger and Jack/Girl Cheesing is meant to be sort of ridiculous, and a great way to incorporate modern day pop culture and meme references. Tweet Cute is the kind of laugh-out-loud, smile to yourself book that still manages to pack in a ton of heart. Jack and Pepper are both dealing with their own problems, and their Twitter war goes from being a source of stress to a competition between friends that helps them let out a little steam. I loved how this book snuck in complex family relationships in between memes and tweets, and it’s easily now one of my all-time faves.

What I loved: The PUNS. The MEMES. The incorporation of social media and the realistic, non-judgmental depiction of how it influences the everyday lives of students and adults!! I like my jokes like I like my grilled cheese – extra cheesy and extra gooey, so Tweet Cute was perfect for me. The romance between Jack and Pepper is absolutely adorable and complicated at best, but at the same time, it’s so, so simple. I loved the progression of their relationship, online and offline, and the ending left me with a happy sigh.
Lighthearted fluff aside, Tweet Cute packed a surprising emotional punch for me. Both Jack and Pepper struggle with familial issues that mainly stem from their siblings, and I found myself relating to both of them as they dealt with their own separate drama at home.
What I didn’t love: Honestly, nothing. Tweet Cute is perfect for what it is: a cheesy contemporary YA romance that incorporates social media, but that’s comforting all the same. Even the rivalries I thought were going to annoy me didn’t, because Emma Lord sneaks in reconciliation and a life lesson in how we make snap judgments about people in between grilled cheese recipes.

Tweet Cute combines all of the things I love, and while I know it might be a little too cheesy for some, it’s perfect for me (and my lactose-intolerant self). I’d recommend it to anyone who appreciates a good pun, can relate to the stress and pressure of school, struggles with family tension and drama, or is simply looking for a fun, quick read. I can’t wait to start gifting Tweet Cute to my friends and family!

[…] Tweet Cute is just a fun book from start to finish! Filled with pop culture references and memes, it’s almost too silly, but cheesy enough to work. The romance is adorable and the humor is exactly my cup of tea, but there’s a level of heart in Tweet Cute that I didn’t expect. The family dynamics are complicated and messy and realistic in their ridiculousness and that’s what really cemented the book as one of my favorite reads this year. As someone who has Gossip Girl as a guilty pleasure and loves a good pun, Tweet Cute was basically written for me. You can read the rest of my rave review here. […]
